What is the com port?
The com port is the port used by the computer for serial communication.  A list of available com ports will be shown in the communication preferences.  You can see what ports are available using Windows Device Manager.
Windows XP
  1. From the Start Menu right click My Computer and select Properties.
  2. From the System Properties dialog click the Hardware tab.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. From the Device Manager dialog expand Ports (Com & LPT).
  5. All available serial ports will be shown and will have names like COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.
Windows Vista
  1. From the Start Menu right click Computer and select Properties.
  2. From the System dialog click Device Manager.
  3. From the Device Manager dialog expand Ports (Com & LPT).
  4. All available serial ports will be shown and will have names like COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.
